Nujoma at 94: Geingob leads birthday wishes
While wishing founding president Sam Nujoma a happy 94th birthday, President Hage Geingob said Namibians should strive to act with courage in others’ interest.
"Each year on this very day of 12 May, we delight in the unique opportunity to marvel at the wonder of a true revolutionary who has demonstrated commendable leadership as he gave marching orders to the sons and daughters of Namibia to fight for their freedom.
“Therefore, the hope for a united, inclusive and prosperous Namibia must propel us to always act courageously in the interests of the Namibian people.
“We revel in the person that is comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the leader of the Namibian revolution, the father of the Namibian nation, and the founding president of the Republic of Namibia," he said in a statement released last night.
Geingob added that Nujoma played a towering role in uniting Namibians in their march for a stable and prosperous Namibia.
"As we progress towards Vision 2030, we pay homage to this stalwart of our liberation struggle. Let us be reminded - especially in this ‘Year of Revival’ - that, ultimately, revolution is an act of hope, as the Russian revolutionary Peter Kropotkin so wonderfully put it."
Transition to democracy
On behalf of the people and the government of Namibia, Geibgob wished Nujoma a joyous birthday, writing: "Long live the leader of the Namibian revolution! Long live the icon of our liberation struggle! Long live the father of the Namibian nation! Long live the Republic of Namibia!"
Nujoma was born on 12 May 1929 in Etunda village in the Omusati Region. He is the first born in a family of 11.
He led Swapo between 1960 and 2007 – having been at the helm of the former liberation movement during the war for independence. Nujoma was Namibia’s president for 15 years between 1990 and 2005, overseeing the transition to democracy.
