Nudo

The top leadership of the National Unity Democratic Organisation(Nudo) has decided to postpone the party’s elective congress, originally slated to take place this Saturday.

Speculation suggests that the party does not have enough money to convene the congress, hence its executive decided to postpone the convention to 13 July. There are also talks that unresolved conflicts within the party have contributed to the postponement.

“It is regrettable that a last-minute postponement had to occur. We understand the party is waiting for funding from government for its parliamentary seats,” a party insider disclosed.

An executive member of Nudo, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the postponement, which was announced at a meeting held on Saturday.

Nudo will receive just over N$2 million for its two seats in the National Assembly.

Financial challenges

Various senior party members who spoke to Namibian Sun over the weekend expressed concern over the dire state of the party’s finances.

“If we use the money from government to host the congress, where will the money to run party affairs after congress come from? That money must be used for the administrative affairs of the party in order to grow the supporter base,” another source said.

They added: “The financial challenges facing the party are a clear sign that the leadership has failed to prudently manage the party’s affairs. They have not worked on strategies to make money for Nudo.”

This will be the last time Nudo hosts its congress during an election year.

This change was reportedly made at its recent national council meeting because intra-party congresses are disruptive, divisive in their nature and create unwanted internal fights, the national council – Nudo’s highest decision-making organ between congresses - resolved.

To effect the necessary changes around new elective congress dates, the party will change its constitution to make way for the new regime.

Currently, there are numerous party big shots who have indicated their appetite to lead the party.

Sitting president and deputy health minister Ester Muinjangue will face stiff competition from the party’s vice-president Peter Kazongomuinja, secretary-general Josef Kauandenge, City of Windhoek deputy mayor Joseph Uapingene and former Okakarara constituency councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu.
