Nkurenkuru entrepreneurs hindered by shortage of malls
Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba says there is a shortage of shopping malls in Nkurenkuru, which restricts potential retailers from establishing businesses in the town.
Pohamba made these remarks at the Nkurenkuru gala dinner on Saturday, where the town raised N$219 500 towards the realisation of its expo. At the expo, businesspeople can market their businesses and showcase their services and goods.
The expo is slated to take place between 28 June and 7 July at the Nkurenkuru expo site.
“The theme for this year, which states that ‘Opportunity Awaits for Investments’, is indeed true for this fast-growing gateway town with abundant investment possibilities,” Pohamba said.
He urged entrepreneurs in the construction industry to consider building modern shopping malls in Nkurenkuru. This, he suggested, would attract potential investors to open businesses, thereby offering employment opportunities to residents.
"Nkurenkuru, being the regional capital of Kavango West, hosts a lot of national activities that require people to be accommodated, but unfortunately, there is still a great shortage of accommodation facilities to cater for the great demand of visitors who come to Nkurenkuru daily. Additionally, other investment opportunities include manufacturing, tailoring, restaurants, warehouses and many more,” he said.
Conducive environment
Pohamba said the Nkurenkuru Town Council has created a conducive environment through the provision of excellent services ranging from an uninterrupted supply of fresh water for human consumption and business purposes, the availability of surveyed residential and business plots, and sewer and electricity provision.
“All these services are offered at a reasonable price to allow businesspeople to prosper and reinvest in their businesses to encourage businesses to flourish and expand. Informal traders, who are playing a crucial role in contributing to the social development of the town, are encouraged to form joint ventures with larger investors to take advantage of the opportunities that are available for small business enterprises, such as the construction of the soon-to-be-completed Nkurenkuru Open Market, which can allow them to sell their much-needed products to the residents."
Population
Nkurenkuru is home to 10 261 inhabitants as per the latest preliminary census statistics on population for 2023, which makes it an ideal environment for businesses to flourish, the former president added.
"Nkurenkuru is blessed with fertile soil and plentiful water supply from the mighty Kavango River, making it a viable area for agro- and horticultural production. There is a great demand for housing for the growing population of workers in the public service, such as police officers, nurses, teachers and the private sector alike, who want to buy family dwellings and reside in Nkurenkuru," he added.
He urged investors to explore investing in housing and hospitality development with the assurance of good returns for their investments.

Pohamba also revealed that some ministries that have been allocated land by the Nkurenkuru Town Council have already started constructing their offices there, aiming to bring decentralised services to the community.
“I am urging all other ministries and agencies that have been allocated land to commence construction and contribute to the social and economic development of the town, ultimately enhancing the growth of Nkurenkuru,” Pohamba added.
