The Namibia National Olympics Committee (NNOC) on Friday announced Namibia’s team for Commonwealth Games, with some potential medallists in the mix.

The games will be taking place in Birmingham, England, from 28 July to 8 August.

This time around, Namibia goes into the games with a number of debutants, while only a few are making a return to the games.

It will be the first ever Commonwealth Games appearance for athletes such as Christine Mboma , Daniel Paulus, Andre Retief, Ivan Geldenhuys and Mahmad Bock, while Alexander Skinner, Ronan Wantenaar, Imke Jagau, Anri Krugel, Divan du Plooy, Romio Goliath and Jason Afrikaner will also be making their competition debut.

Veterans Helalia Johannes and Jonas Junius will attempt to add to their accolades. Top Namibian prospect and 400-metre specialist Bock said this competition is what he has been working for all his career.

“I am truly humbled and grateful to be part of the team because this is what we have been working for as athletes. “Representing your country at such a big event is an honour and I would like to thank my coach and everyone who played a role.

“I will be ready to compete at this event because I have been working hard in training,” he said.

20 medals so far

The NNOC and the Commonwealth Games Association also announced that Marja Woortman will be the chef de mission for the team heading to England.

Namibia has competed in seven Commonwealth Games, making its first appearance in Victoria, Canada, back in 2006.

The country has so far collected a total of 20 medals - five gold, four silver and 11 bronze.

She won the women’s marathon in a time of 2:32:40, while also earned a gold medal in 2018 by beating Canada’s Thomas Blumenfeld in their light welterweight fight.
