JUST IN: Okahandja shrine damaged
The tombstone of revered Ombara Kandjanatozombua Tjiho of Gam, who was buried in 2008 at the Ovaherero Heroes Shrine at Okahandja, has collapsed after heavy rains.
One of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) Paramount Chief (PC) claimants, Professor Mutjinde Katjiua, has extended his compassion with the community of Gam.
Katjiua said in a statement: "At this stage, the cause of the damage is still to be confirmed. However, the preliminary opinion of consultants attributed the events to a prior event in conjunction with the recent heavy rains.
“In their opinion, the area immediately near the grave of Ombara Tjiho was structurally weakened during June 2021. This was due to the fact that a front-end loader was used to dig a grave for the Namibian Hero, Prof. Mburumba Kerina."
According to Katjiua, the digging took place on the instructions of the Namibian government and investigations will be carried out and the nation and family will be informed.
