Illegal taxis on the rise
NEWS IN SHORT
Damien Mabengano, the deputy director for transportation and regulation in the works and transport ministry, has expressed serious concerns about the rise of illegal taxi operators countrywide.
Mabengano was speaking earlier this week during the official opening of a three-day workshop on public passenger road transportation within municipal or town areas in Ongwediva.
In an engagement with police, public transport users and operators, he said the number of illegal taxis in the country is worrying, and as stakeholders, they need to work together to address the issue.
Mabengano said another concern is that many taxi drivers operate without a permit and without a valid driving licence.
“The issue of illegal taxis is because of our system. When we need to look at the system we use to issue taxis with permits, People have raised concerns that the system is complex, hence they do not go through the proper channels. They try to bypass the system and drive the taxi without a permit,” he said.
Mabengano said the application processes for taxi permits should be accessible so that when a person applies, they can easily comply and get the license to operate legally.
