Iipumbu calls on rural entrepreneurs to apply for aid
Industrialisation and trade minister Lucia Iipumbu has expressed her disappointment regarding the low number of applications for the equipment aid scheme.
Iipumbu emphasised the critical need for more engagement from entrepreneurs across the country, particularly those in rural areas.
"It’s disappointing to see that those who need this support the most are not applying," she said. She called on entrepreneurs to engage more actively with the available resources, noting that the equipment aid scheme and the industrial upgrade and modernisation programme (IUMP) are designed to foster growth across all communities.
During a recent handover of equipment to beneficiaries of the equipment aid scheme (EAS), Iipumbu revealed that only 671 applications were submitted nationwide, a severe gap to the potential demand for such resources. "As big as Namibia is, I think we did not pay attention. We need more applications," she said.
While urging potential beneficiaries to seize the opportunity presented by the scheme, she said the majority of applications in the Erongo Region came from Swakopmund, while rural areas like Daures, Otjimbingwe, Usakos and Walvis Bay rural saw significantly fewer submissions.
The minister also raised concerns about the misuse of allocated equipment.
"We are aware that some beneficiaries keep these machines hidden in their homes and are unable to use them," she noted.
Stimulate the economy
Iipumbu pointed out that historically, the Erongo Region has always ranked third in applications after the Khomas and Oshana regions. However, improvements have been noted, as the region came in second with 39 applications, of which 23 were approved. Under the equipment aid scheme, the region is set to receive equipment valued at N$625 528.
Regarding the IUMP, which supports larger industries, Iipumbu shared that out of 15 applications received, three beneficiaries were shortlisted, amounting to a total of N$8.4 million in potential funding.
However, she emphasised the need for more diverse applications, particularly from rural areas where economic activity is essential.
"Currently, many businesses there are not operational, and we need to stimulate economic activities beyond the urban centres,” she added.
In addition, the minister announced that the EAS will receive a maximum allocation increase from N$30 000 to N$80 000 for successful applicants, aimed at supporting small, medium and micro enterprises (MSMEs) more effectively.
Supportive environment
Reflecting on past challenges, Iipumbu noted that the schemes had been inactive for years but were revitalised due to increased budget allocations.
She expressed hope that this revival would increase growth among businesses, particularly in regions that have fallen behind in applications. "It's not enough to keep this information to ourselves, we need to share opportunities with our neighbours," she said.
Iipumbu emphasised the importance of inclusivity, particularly for women and youth in the business sector, and called for a collective effort to foster a supportive environment for all entrepreneurs. "Let's hold each other’s hands and march in the same direction," she encouraged.
