Former RDP youth leader throws in the towel

Tuyeimo Haidula
Sam Hamunyela this week resigned as a member of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), saying he wants to concentrate on being an entrepreneur.

In a letter addressed to the party’s secretary-general Asser Sheuyange, Hamunyela said he is resigning with immediate effect.

Hamunyela was one of the most active RDP mobilisers in the north and once served as the youth wing’s deputy secretary-general, a position he vacated in 2013.

"I thank you for the time we worked together as comrades, especially during the formation of this political party - which I served as one of the national leaders," he said.

In a telephonic interview with Namibian Sun, Hamunyela said he was resigning to focus all his energies on being a successful entrepreneur.

New political home

Formerly a teacher and economist by profession, he contested as an independent candidate in the Ohangwena Region’s Endola constituency during the 2020 regional council elections.

According to Hamunyela, he has been inactive in party activities since 2013 and the letter is an official notice that his name should no longer be associated with RDP.

He will not be taking partaking in any party activities, he added.

“I want to concentrate on my businesses. I do not want to participate in political activities any more, especially with RDP. I will soon announce the way forward,” he added.

Hamunyela further noted that this is not the end of his political career.

“I will not give up on politics. I am a politician. In the next two months, I will announce my new political home,” he said.

Just last month, RDP leader Mike Kavekotora (66) resigned as a member of parliament.
