Eight die in accident near Ondangwa

• Three survivors still in hospital
A white Toyota bakkie collided head-on with a white Toyota Rush early on Friday morning.

The death toll in an accident at Okashandja village has increased to eight.

The incident took place on Friday on the gravel road between Ondangwa and Uukwiyuushona.

Oshana Region community affairs officer, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, said the accident happened at around 03:00.

The driver of a white Toyota bakkie was driving from Ondangwa towards Uukwiyuushona when he lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with a white Toyota Rush, he said.

The driver of the bakkie, who was identified as David Tomas (66) from Ekwatambwa-Uukwiyuushona, died on the spot. The driver of the other car, Aina Angaleni Iita (46) from Oshakati, sustained leg and arm fractures and was admitted to the Onandjokwe hospital. She was later transferred to Ongwediva Medipark, where she died yesterday.

“Passengers in the Toyota bakkie, Jacob Petrus (73) from Ekwatambwa-Uukwiyuushona and Teodor Akwaake (67) from Opeleka-Uukwiyuushona, died on the spot.”

Meanwhile, Lea Lukas (63) from Omutala village and Immanuel Johannes (35) from Iikango No.4 died at the Onandjokwe hospital, Aiyambo added.

Another person involved in the accident, Festus Kondjeni (36) from Olukonda, was seriously injured and admitted to the Onandjokwe hospital in critical condition. He was transferred to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital and died on Saturday.

A passenger in the Toyota Rush, Nehale Toivo Nadhipite Amupolo (21) from Onomola- Uukwiyuushona, died on the spot.

Three survivors - Daniel Kateta (41), Sakaria Nafuka (39) and Tomas Sakaria (20) – all sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Onandjokwe hospital. Kateta has since been transferred to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased who died at the scene were transported to the Oshakati police mortuary. Police investigations continue.
