ECN pleads for patience over delayed election payments
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) is in the final stages of processing payments for returning officers and vehicle owners who provided services during last year's elections.
Due to a shortage of vehicles, the ECN hired private vehicles for use during the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections. Owners were promised payments ranging from N$1,350 per day, depending on how long their vehicles were utilised.
Although a settlement period of 30 days after the elections had been agreed upon, the vehicle owners have yet to receive their payments.
ECN spokesperson Mulauli Siluka confirmed on Wednesday that no payments had been made to vehicle owners but assured that the issue was being resolved.
“We apologize for the delay in payments, but the calculations have been completed, and payments will be sent out next week, provided there are no further hiccups,” Siluka said.
Progress on other payments
Siluka noted that the ECN had recently completed payments for polling officers, while other people who worked for ECN during the elections have already received their dues.
“For returning officers, some have already been paid. Those who encountered issues with their payments are being assisted, and we expect all payments to be finalized by the end of this week,” he added.
The ECN has apologised for the inconvenience caused to both vehicle owners and returning officers, attributing the delays to processing challenges.
“We acknowledge the frustration this has caused and are committed to resolving all outstanding payments promptly,” Siluka emphasized.
