LPM blasts ‘shameful disgrace’ NamPower over CFO job

• ...Takes aim at Haulofu’s silence
Kairabeb questioned Gotore's skills if he is unable to train an understudy by the end of his term in May.

NamPower management has come under fire for allegedly failing to identify a Namibian to take over from Zimbabwean national Michael Gotore, who has served as the company’s chief financial officer (CFO) since 2019 and has been reappointed for another five years.

Namibian Sun on Monday reported that NamPower extended Gotore’s contract despite a government directive that key positions in state-owned-enterprises should not be held by expats.

Gotore, a chartered accountant by profession who served as CFO in a number of state-owned-enterprises, was appointed on 1 June 2019 for a five-year period until 31 May 2024.

Lazarus Kairabeb, the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) policy unit chairperson, has questioned Gotore’s skills if he is not able to prepare an understudy by the end of his term in May.

“What good is in a man spending five years of implementing a directive and by the end of his term, [he is] not in a position to identify a candidate?

"And for you to take pride in announcing that you do not discuss employee matters in newspapers is a shameful disgrace,” he said of NamPower CEO Simson Haulofu’s decision to remain tight-lipped on the matter when contacted by Namibian Sun.

Not business as usual

LPM also cautioned Haulofu and other public enterprises’ leaders that they should take note that soon business will no longer be the same.

Kairabeb added that Namibians should be aware that "the enjoyment of power inevitably corrupts the judgment of reason and, at times, perverts its liberty".

“This explains why many of the public enterprises in Namibia never really adhere to regulations. Corporate leaders must be obligated to provide the necessary information and not take offence to legitimate questions in a democratic milieu! It is true that corporate leaders in Namibia managed to escape proper public scrutiny for many years,” he said.
