EDITORIAL: Namibians’ obsession with sex

Every nation has its shame, and ours is sex. Our society has become so obsessed with sex that even medical doctors are allegedly raping unconscious, brain-damaged patients. If non-consensual, predatory sex was a sport, Namibia would be competing for top honours. Sex oozes from the pores of our national life. The rape statistics have gone through the roof, and prisons are teeming with sex offenders. Some are serving time for bestiality after being caught raping donkeys.

But between humans, the sin is not sex itself. Not if it is consensual. It’s the opposite that’s eating our country’s moral fabric from within. What is it with these criminal shortcuts? What happened to courtship – the medieval boy-meets-girl modus operandi, which often had a happily-ever-after end game? Men used to talk marriage and prosperity. Woman fantasised about family – or careers. Today, the table talks are about how to set up OnlyFans accounts.

The insatiable lust for nakedness, fuelled by the media and quasi-pornographic underworld, have only angered the brute beast in us. The commercial world has taken note of the obsession and is cashing in on it. They have even introduced sex robots - in android. The sex dolls, which don’t hump or speak, have been condemned to the dustbin of history. Sex is now powered by futuristic artificial intelligence algorithms. Things will only get worse. The obsession will soar, leaving women, children and even patients between the jaws of sex predators.
