Do as Namibians do, ambassador tells local Chinese
In a call for cultural unity and shared respect, the Chinese ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping has encouraged every Chinese national residing in the country to "do as the Namibians do".
His remarks, made during the 2024 Chinese Spring Festival Gala, emphasised the importance of adhering to local laws and regulations, respecting Namibian culture and actively contributing to the social and economic development of their adopted home.
“Chinese nationals here are an important bridge of friendship between China and Namibia as well as a walking ‘name card’ of China in Namibia. We hope that the various Chinese community organisations will continue to play a role of uniting all the Chinese nationals in Namibia and help them integrate into the local society. We also hope that every Chinese national here will make contributions to the promotion of the traditional friendship between China and Namibia,” he said.
The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Namibia (CGCCIN) organised a glamorous event on Saturday evening to celebrate the festival.
During the event, the ambassador extended best wishes for an auspicious Year of the Dragon, highlighting that this significant traditional festival - known for family reunions and universal joy - holds special importance for the Chinese community residing in Namibia.
Sense of family
Acknowledging Namibia as the new home for some Chinese, Zhao thanked chairperson Jiang Bo and the CGCCIN for organising the event and expressed appreciation that the gathering provided an opportunity for the Chinese community to come together, fostering a sense of family and enabling each member to experience the warmth of home.
He also thanked Namibian political leaders - including labour minister Utoni Nujoma, justice minister Yvonne Dausab and Namibian ambassador to China Elia Kaiyamo - for their presence at the celebration.
“Participating in this event amid your busy schedule has fully reflected the deep friendship of the Namibian people towards the Chinese people. We are deeply honoured by your kind presence.”
He also reminded Chinese nationals living in Namibia that general secretary Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) central committee care deeply about Chinese people living abroad.
“All diplomats of the Chinese embassy in Namibia will resolutely implement general secretary Xi’s important instructions, fully practice ‘diplomacy for the people’, actively promote the legitimate interests of our fellow Chinese, and wholeheartedly serve them as close friends,” he added.
