Bondelswarts unhappy with ‘drunkards’ label
News in shorts
Bondelswarts Heritage Foundation chairperson Mathew Veldskoen recently wrote to the minister of mines and energy Tom Alweendo to complain about statements made by Philip le Roux, the CEO of the Swanson tantalum mining project near Warmbad, about 15 kilometres north of the Orange River.
Veldskoen is unhappy that Le Roux, in an interview with a local weekly newspaper, expressed his concern about alcohol and drug abuse among the Bondelswarts, which allegedly makes them unsuitable for jobs that will be made available at the mine.
The almost N$190 million project aims to build the mine by next year, and expects to create around 200 jobs.
"It is particularly disturbing that the Swanson tantalum project, which previously promised to support the local community by providing 96 jobs to local residents, is now making disparaging comments against the same community that supported their environmental clearance certificate,” Veldskoen wrote.
