Tunacor workers want trust fund

The workers of Tunacor Fisheries Limited and Etosha Fishing yesterday held a demonstration at Walvis Bay to express dissatisfaction with their management on several concerns. The workers, under the tutelage of the Namibia Seaman and Allied Workers Union (Nasawu), marched from Tunacor in Ben Amathila Avenue to the ministry of fsheries and marine resources, where a petition was handed over.
In the petition, Tunacor workers said they want the company to establish a trust fund for workers.
“This company has no trust fund for its employees. A lot of other companies in the fishing industry have established trust funds for their employees, and workers benefit from those trust funds each year," Tunacor shop steward Hileni Ndeshaanya said.
According to her, the company receives reasonable fishing quotas of hake and horse mackerel, but workers do not benefit in any profit-sharing arrangement.
“We request the ministry of fisheries to allocate at least 10% of the quota which Tunacor receives every year to the trust fund of the workers,” the petition read.
