Minimum wage officially increased
The ministry of labour, industrial relations and employment creation published a decree for the new national minimum wage in the Government Gazette last week.
The adjustments will be phased in over three years, with the first increase coming into force on 1 January 2025.
After receiving input from the wage commission, minister Utoni Nujoma decided that the most underpaid employees - excluding soldiers, police officers, prison guards and members of the Namibian Central Intelligence Service - should earn more from next year.
Domestic workers will have to be paid at least N$12 an hour from next year, and N$15 in 2026, before rising to N$18 an hour by 2027.
Farmworkers were also specifically singled out. Their wages must be at least N$10 per hour by 1 January next year, N$14 per hour in 2026 and N$18 per hour from 1 January 2027. Rations and housing may not be deducted, and equipment or other necessary inputs to carry out their work may not be deducted from their wages either.
Overtime and work on a Sunday or public holiday must be paid additionally as well.
The wage commission will review the order every two years, especially due to inflation, according to Government Gazette no. 8409.
