Soldiers arrested over Angolan whisky
Three members of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) were arrested at the Oshivelo checkpoint on Sunday afternoon after they were found in possession of 1 182 packets of Angolan whisky and 1 005 boxes of cigarettes, with a combined value of N$139 200.
Oshikoto police regional commander, Commissioner Teopolina Kalompo-Nashikaku, confirmed that the three soldiers - Epafras Shoopala Kayoko, Salom Shaama and Lovisa Sikuna Asker - were arrested and appeared in the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Kayoko and Shaama were granted bail of N$20 000 and N$15 000 respectively while Asker was released on a fine of N$4 000.
Kalompo-Nashikaku said they have each been charged with contravening the Customs and Excise Act regarding the possession of illicit goods.
Whisky and cigarettes
Kayoko (45) was found with 279 packs of Best whisky valued at N$27 900 and 1 000 small boxes of cigarettes valued at N$20 000.
He appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail of N$20 000. His case was postponed to 1 September.
“The second suspect [Shaama, aged 36] was found with 862 packs of Best whisky valued at N$86 200 and five packs of cigarettes valued at N$1 000,” Kalompo-Nashikaku said.
He too appeared on Monday and was granted bail of N$15 000. His case was postponed to 16 June.
The 54-year-old Asker was found with 41 packs of Best whisky, valued at N$4 100. She appeared on the same day and was fined N$4 000, or risked 10 months’ imprisonment. Kalompo-Nashikaku said Asker paid the fine.
