Man robbed after robbing denied bail

A man who claims to have been robbed after allegedly robbing and attempting to rape a 38-year-old woman was yesterday denied bail in the Ondangwa Magistrate's Court.

Taapopi Abner Angula appeared before Magistrate Nelao Ya France, who postponed the matter to 27 January 2025 for further investigations.

State prosecutor Wisdom Ndakondja opposed bail, arguing that it was not in the interest of the administration of justice nor public interest to release the accused on bail. Ya France informed the accused that while the State is objecting to bail at this stage, he still has the right to apply during a formal bail application.

"Under a formal bail application, you are the applicant. Therefore, you have to inform the court of the reasons you need bail to be granted. You also have the opportunity to call witnesses to testify on your behalf. However, keep in mind that the witnesses will be subject to cross-examination by the respondent prosecutor, and the court will also put questions [to them] to gain clarity," she said.

The woman survived the attempted rape after she reportedly squeezed Angula’s testicles and managed to flee. She was attacked on Saturday while walking from Ondangwa’s Uupopo to Onantsi at around 22:30. Although she escaped the rape attempt, Angula allegedly robbed her of her wig, money and cellphone during the incident.

After arriving home, she told her housemates what happened and they returned to the scene of the crime. They found Angula not far from the scene, where he was apprehended.

However, he then revealed that he did not have the items he stole from the woman because he was also robbed by unknown people soon after attacking her.
