Lichtenstrasser testifies about guilty plea

News in short
Iréne-Mari van der Walt
Ernst Lichtenstrasser yesterday testified about his alleged admission that he murdered Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) directors Eckhart Mueller and Heimo Hellwig in 2019.

He told judge Christie Liebenberg that Inspector Loodewyk van Graan promised him that he could talk to his wife if he admitted guilt.

He added that he believed this confession was "preliminary" and that he would later formally confess before a magistrate.

In the confession, Lichtenstrasser said he waited for Mueller at a turn-off outside Arandis, but that he had second thoughts.

"It was like there were two sides of me. I was constantly asking myself if this was worth it. One side said I should just talk to him [Mueller] and the other saw them as enemies."

Lichtenstrasser also explained to Van Graan during the confession that he felt like he was on a 'mission'.

"During a mission, nothing ever goes as it should. I couldn't believe that everything went so smoothly," he said at the time.
