Kanalelo demands N$435 000 for Unam contract termination
Former head coach of the University of Namibia Football Club (Unam FC) Fillemon ‘Ronny’ Kanalelo is demanding N$435 000 from the institution following the sudden termination of his coaching services in December last year.
In court papers, Kanalelo claimed that the university's decision to end his contract was a breach of their agreement. He is now seeking compensation of N$435 000, which accounts for the unpaid portion of his original contract with the institution.
Kanalelo entered into a written consultancy agreement with Unam, which was represented by vice-chancellor Professor Kenneth Matengu, to provide professional coaching services to its football club for the entire 2022/2023 premier league football season.
The contract, which commenced on 1 November 2022, outlined that Kanalelo would be paid a monthly fee of N$70 500 for his services. From this, he kept N$30 000 for himself as head coach, and paid his assistant coach N$15 000. The goalkeeper and fitness coaches each received N$10 000, while the team medic got N$5 500.
“[Kanalelo] duly complied with all his obligations regarding the agreement and provided professional coaching services to Unam FC,” court papers read.
Unsatisfactory performance
“[Unam] also complied with its obligations in terms of the agreement and paid the monthly professional fees from June to December 2023. The initial contract period would [have been] from 1 November 2022 to 30 November 2023, and [was set to be] extended for a second term, commencing on 1 December 2023 and terminating on 30 June 2025,” the document read.
During this period, the football club was expected to achieve at least a fifth-place finish in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership and to advance beyond the first round in other cup competitions. However, on 17 December last year, Unam terminated the agreement, citing unsatisfactory performance of the team.
Former Sundowns goalkeeper Kanalelo said the termination was unjustified and constituted a repudiation of the contract.
In the termination letter seen by Namibian Sun, Unam informed Kanalelo that it will no longer use his consultancy coaching services as of 17 December 2023.
“Following the unsatisfactory performance of Unam FC during the first half of the 2023/2024 football season, Unam has been left with no choice but to terminate the consultancy services,” Matengu wrote.
To mitigate his losses, Kanalelo secured a three-month coaching contract with African Stars Football Club, which started on 24 February 2024 for a monthly remuneration of N$25 000. In his lawsuit against Unam, he is represented by lawyer Patrick Kauta, who is closely linked to African Stars and acted as its chairman.
