#JustIn: De Klerk’s bail application postponed to Wednesday
Fugitive lawyer Marén de Klerk’s bail application has been postponed to Wednesday in the Paarl Magistrate Court for the state to oppose bail.
De Klerk made his second court appearance today an accused in the Fishrot saga, was arrested in South Africa last Thursday while pursuing a separate case in which he was allegedly conned out of N$3 million by disbarred lawyer, Ben van Heerden.
He willingly met with the police in Paarl, Western Cape, but was arrested under an Interpol red notice and informed that the Paarl Magistrate Court had issued a warrant of arrest against him in 2022.
He is wanted in Namibia where he is accused of fraud, money laundering and racketeering, all related to the Fishrot scandal.
The South African government received a request from Namibia for De Klerk’s extradition on 15 October 2021.
De Klerk briefly appeared in the Paarl court on Friday, but the matter was postponed to today for a bail application, but the state was allegedly not ready to oppose bail.
