De Jager sworn in as acting High Court judge
Advocate Beatrix de Jager was sworn in yesterday as an acting judge of the High Court. She officially assumed this position yesterday and will occupy it for three months until her term expires on 16 April.
Judge Philanda Christiaan, who was promoted from her position as an acting judge to a judge of the High Court, also took the oath yesterday.
De Jager began her legal career as a clerk in the office of the state prosecutor in March 2003. She worked in this capacity until July 2004, when she was admitted as a legal practitioner on 19 July 2004. She then practiced at the office of the state prosecutor before joining Kirsten & Co, where she practiced until November 2008.
Her focus revolves primarily around civil matters, with experience in the administration of wills and estates, human rights, labour disputes, and mediation and arbitration.
The appointments of De Jager and Christiaan followed the first public interviews of candidate judges. A third candidate judge, advocate Slysken Sikiso Makando, also underwent a public interview, but the decision regarding his appointment is still pending.
