Alleged child rapist awaits psychiatrist report
News in short
The psychiatric evaluation of a man accused of raping and sexually abusing several underage boys in Windhoek has still not been completed.
Johann Maree's case was postponed to 15 December in the Windhoek High Court yesterday.
In September, Maree requested to be evaluated by a psychiatrist to determine whether he is capable of standing trial.
He claimed he suffered a mental breakdown at the time of the alleged crimes and cannot remember anything from that period.
The State alleged that Maree raped 15 underage boys between 2014 and 2020, and used 10 boys to produce pornographic footage, which he later sold on the dark web.
Maree faces a total of 75 charges, which also include child trafficking and encouraging or allowing a child under the age of 16 to consume alcohol.
The former reservist was arrested in April 2020, and is currently in custody at the Windhoek Central Prison.
Judge Christie Liebenberg is presiding.
