Namibia to represent Global South at UN summit
Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba has underlined Namibia’s commitment to promote the development goals of southern African regions at the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, slated for September.
President Nangolo Mbumba made these remarks during his keynote address over the weekend as a peer at the 44th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
He said Namibia, as a co-facilitator with Germany for the upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future, is aware of its role as a crucial representative for the region.
“Namibia has taken on this important role as a representative of the Global South. I can assure you that Namibia has accepted this task with the utmost dedication and willingness to add our collective voice so that together we can inclusively build a better world for current and future generations,” Mbumba said.
The Summit of the Future will take place on 22 and 23 September in New York, coinciding with the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Last week, the president of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, met with Namibia’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, Neville Gertze, and his German counterpart, Antje Leendertse, in preparation for the UN summit.
He also met separately with the international relations and cooperation minister Dr. Peya Mushelenga.
Regional cooperation
Over the weekend, Mbumba also thanked regional leaders for their support during the difficult farewell of the late president Hage Geingob and shared Namibia’s condolences with Malawi following the recent loss of Vice-President Dr Saulos Chilima, as well as Tanzania’s loss of the late president Mzee Mwinyi.
Namibia’s president further said the SADC Electoral Advisory Council observers have just completed their visit in preparation for the upcoming national election in Namibia and that Namibia is committed to taking their findings and advice into account.
Furthermore, Mbumba highlighted the threat of escalating unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo and praised the work of SADC peace forces there and in Mozambique, where the situation in Cabo Delgado has stabilised.
