Oshikoto spends N$8.4m on 380 toilets
Efforts made to end open defecation
A further N$3.3 million has been earmarked for the construction of 180 toilets during the current financial year.
Between 2019 and 2023, the Oshikoto Regional Council has constructed 380 toilets in 10 constituencies to the tune of N$8.4 million, as the council aims to end open defecation in the region.
A total of N$3.3 million has been earmarked for the construction of an additional 180 toilets during the current financial year. These figures were revealed by the regional council following a Namibian Sun inquiry.
The 380 toilets were constructed by a total of 51 contractors, it said.
For the 2018/2019 financial year, the materials were supplied by Okashana Rural Development Centre, by Namibia Services Maintenance and Shivute Building Supplies for 2019/2020 and by local suppliers for 2020/2021.
For the 2021/2022 financial year, Luhoko Investment supplied the materials, while Hado Investment and Vula Trading Namibia, respectively, supplied the materials during the financial years that followed.
“Council has over the years appointed different local suppliers who have the capacity to supply and deliver quality toilet materials and all toilet materials were successfully delivered,” it said.
“It is important to take note that the successful bidder in each financial year is appointed through an open and fair procurement process as outlined in the Public Procurement Act.”
Improving rural sanitation
The council stressed that it is constructing toilets in rural areas to improve the well-being of community members. “Despite the limited resources at our disposal, improving rural sanitation in our region remains an integral part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improve the well-being of residents, promote health and ensure that our communities are open defecation free.
“The regional council will continue to prioritise sanitation when funds are available. Meanwhile, the council will also continue to create awareness among our rural communities to join this noble initiative through constructing toilets for themselves, using available materials.”
