Six children, aged between six and nine years, were hospitalised on Friday following suspected mushroom poisoning in Kashira village, Kavango East.
Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, head of crime investigations in the region, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 15:00.
According to Kanyetu, the Ndiyona police station received a report indicating that the minors, from five different households, consumed mushrooms they found while playing in the bushes near their homes.
“Upon returning home, some of the children began vomiting and feeling weak,” Kanyetu said. A piece of the mushroom was recovered and handed over to medical staff to aid in the children's treatment.
Medical Response
The minors were taken to Nyangana Hospital, where they received medical attention. Hospital officials reported that the children are stable and were expected to be discharged on Saturday.
Authorities have not confirmed the type of mushroom consumed and how prevalent it may be in the area.
