Striving for good governance

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) recently hosted a discussion on the third national review for the development of Namibia's National Governance Report.

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a platform established by African heads of state within the African Union to oversee governance and define the principles of good governance.

Member of the APRM National Governing Council, Uhuru Dempers, said good governance is defined as the processes that relate to political and institutional outcomes that are necessary to achieve the goals of development.

Good governance under review

The report addresses issues characterised by budget management, youth unemployment, socio-economic development, political governance and democracy.

Various local authorities attended the event and spoke on issues of decentralisation, constitutional laws and democracy, as well as the empowerment of traditional leaders.

Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes emphasised the challenge of decentralisation and its impact on decision-making processes. Forbes suggested that improved measures should be implemented to expedite resolution and policy-making processes.

Refine training

Some key findings in the targeted review report on youth unemployment addressed issues like the mismatch between the products produced by the education and training sector and the demands of the job market in terms of skills and employment requirements.

The report also identified a lack of coordination among institutions and agencies addressing youth unemployment and undertaking youth empowerment initiatives.

The report calls for continuous dialogue and engagement between institutions to ensure that trainees are equipped with the necessary skills required in the job market.
