Oshana to host investment conference
With the aim of creating an environment that fosters investment opportunities, promotes economic growth and improve the quality of life for the people of the region, Oshana will host an investment conference next month.
The conference, which will take place from 23 to 24 August at the University of Namibia (Unam) José Eduardo Dos Santos campus, is aimed at marketing Oshana as an investment destination.
It will serve as a platform for potential investors to explore the vast potential that the region has to offer, from agriculture to tourism, manufacturing to technology, Oshana governor Elia Irimari said.
Work together
Speaking during the launch recently, Irimari said they believe that by attracting investment, they can create job opportunities, enhance infrastructure and ultimately improve the overall well-being of the people in the region.
"By working together, we can transform Oshana into a thriving hub of economic activity, contributing to the growth of our nation as a whole," he said.
Information minister Peya Mushelenga, who officially launched the investment conference, said it will complement the upcoming Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair.
Create strategies
Mushelenga said the conference is a good initiative because the first shops in northern Namibia were located in the Oshana Region, making it the epicentre of trade and investment.
"Generally, investors focus on capital cities and commercial cities, leaving countries with a spatial distribution of economic activities," he said.
Mushelenga said scholars of regional and local economic development have maintained that there are negative effects resulting from concentrating economic activities in selected geographic locations.
He said that, thus, there is a need for regional leaders to come up with strategies to bring economic activity to regions.
Oshana regional planning and economic development head Jeckonia Nangolo said they expect about 250 participants at the conference, with 30 exhibitors having already shown interest in showcasing their services and products to potential investors.
The Oshana regional office has put aside close to N$500 000 for the hosting of the event.
