Omuthiya youth call on investors to unlock untapped potential
Opportunities abound in Omuthiya, local resident says
David Uusiku, a resident of Omuthiya, says with a lack of basic services and a pressing need for development in the area, potential investors should seize the opportunity to invest in a town with so much untapped potential.
Speaking to Ewi lyaNooli over the weekend, Uusiku said although development is underway in the town, more can still be achieved. He urged potential investors to consider the town.
High demand for housing
Uusiku highlighted the high demand for housing in the town, noting that this presents significant opportunities for developers.
However, he also urged the Omuthiya Town Council to make land available to residents, pointing out that he applied for land in 2011 but remains on the waiting list.
“So for anybody out there, I'm proud to inform you that investing in Omuthiya is something very good because most of the services are not yet there,” Uusiku said.
“The moment you come and then you become the first one to put up that service, you will have good results at the end of the year. So it's always good that you come and then establish your business in Omuthiya," he said.
“They say the early bird catches the worm,” he added.
Vast opportunities
On the issue of infrastructure development, Uusiku said progress has been achieved over the years, with a number of business complexes constructed that accommodate supermarkets, financial institutions and clothing shops.
“At the moment, we have the shopping mall, which consists of a food grocery shop. We also have bank services,” Uusiku said.
He said opportunities for businesses to set up shop are rife, with large tracts of undeveloped areas available for investment opportunities.
"When it comes to infrastructure development, one can come and set up his or her complex because the land is still there, not fully utilised. We still have open land that is free to be bought by those that are interested in developing the town."
He noted that investors "can either come and rent those buildings for those who have set up the infrastructures already, or they can come and set up their own infrastructures and help other people also to rent in them.”
Workforce available
On the issue of youth unemployment, Uusiku said that while it is often seen as a challenge, it also presents an opportunity for investors due to the availability of a ready workforce.
He also highlighted the lack of a youth centre where young people can gain knowledge and experience.
Omuthiya is also known for its informal market, where visitors can buy traditional food as well as "delicious kapana."
Uusiku noted that the informal trading market has played a significant role in promoting the town.
Omuthiya is the regional capital of the Oshikoto Region.
