Namibia condemns Israel's actions
Suid-Afrika het sy dringende aansoek amptelik op 29 Desember 2023 by die Wêreldhof in Den Haag ingedien.
Israel is engaged in genocide in Palestine, says the Namibian government. The international relations and cooperation ministry announced last Wednesday that Namibia supports South Africa in its urgent application before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands, against Israel for its ongoing actions in Palestine.
South Africa officially submitted its application to the court on 29 December.
South Africa alleges that Israel has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention and is asking the court to announce temporary measures, including compelling Israel to cease its attacks in Gaza. The ICJ heard South Africa's oral presentation last week.
Position taken
The executive director of the ministry, Penda Naanda, stated that Namibia strongly condemns Israel for the killing of innocent civilians and the violent displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory.
“Namibia maintains the position that the actions ... including the deliberate imposition of living conditions on Palestinians in Gaza that may result in their physical destruction in whole or in part, constitute genocide," according to Naanda.
He said Namibia supports all international efforts to promote the realisation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
Own history
Naanda cited Namibia's own history of subjugation to illegal occupation and apartheid, stating that Namibia participates, among other things, in the proceedings at the International Court regarding the legal consequences arising from Israel's actions in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.
In its written submission filed at the ICJ on 25 October last year, Namibia warned that "Israel is now attempting genocide if the country has not already actively committed genocide in the occupied Palestinian territory," he quoted.
Measures requested
Furthermore, Naanda quoted President Hage Geingob from his New Year's message: "No peaceful person can ignore the bloodshed waged against Palestinians in Gaza."
Namibia will welcome the establishment of temporary measures with Israel to immediately fulfil its obligations under the Genocide Convention of 1948, according to Naanda.
"Based on our steadfast position on the Palestinian issue, Namibia supports the timely initiative taken by the Republic of South Africa," he concluded.
