Govt ‘eager’ to solve housing issues

In a bid to address Namibia's pressing housing and land development issues, senior government officials convened with the Erongo Regional Council to discuss sustainable solutions.

Deputy minister of urban and rural development Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele emphasised the need for equitable access to land.

Namibia faces significant housing challenges, with a national backlog of 300 000 units and an annual need of 30 000 units.

The deputy minister highlighted the government's achievements under the mass housing development programme, which has delivered 4 130 homes since its inception in 2014. She further called for continued private sector support in addressing the housing needs of marginalised communities.

Access to affordable land, water and sanitation remain critical issues, she stressed.

She further urged local authorities to prioritise essential services to enhance the quality of life for Namibians.

!Nawases-Taeyele expressed optimism that the discussions would yield tangible, actionable solutions to improve land and housing accessibility in Namibia.
