Councillors' monthly allowance hiked by up to 25%

Elizabeth Kheibes
The ministry of urban and rural development yesterday announced that municipalities and village and town councils will receive a 15%, 20% and 25% increase in monthly allowances respectively, which came into effect on 1 July.

According to a circular, the ministry amended the allowances in terms of Section 18 (1) and (2) of the Local Authorities Act, and introduced additional airtime allowance for councillors.

It revealed that sitting allowances will be applicable to management committees’ ordinary or extraordinary meetings and special council meetings – limited to one and two meetings per category per month respectively.

"The purchasing amount of a cellphone remains at N$4 000, and it applies to the mayor, deputy mayor, the chairperson of the management committee and chairpersons of village councils only, while the rest of the councillors will receive airtime allowances only.

“Local authority councils must make provision in the budget for the 2023/2024 financial year to cater for the above-mentioned adjustments," the ministry said.

Lucrative

For the 2017/2018 financial year, the annual allowance of a mayor stood at N$88 910. This will now be N$102 246, while the deputy mayor jumps from N$81 289 to N$93 480.

Mayors’ monthly allowance will therefore go from N$7 409 to N$8 520 and from N$6 774 to N$7 790 for deputy mayors.

Mayors’ cellphone allowance remains N$1 000 per month, while deputy mayors will receive N$600. Sitting fees will be N$350 per sitting across the board for municipal and town councils, and N$200 per sitting for village councils.
