Committee consults on Witbooi shrine
News in short
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resources and Community Development this week started consultation meetings in the Hardap and //Karas regions on a motion to erect a shrine in honour of Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi.
Last year, the committee received the motion calling for a shrine at Vaalgras to honour the Nama chief where he made his ultimate sacrifice in resistance against imperialism.
“It is against this background that the committee resolved to undertake public consultative meetings to gather important information, evidence and input from relevant stakeholders in order to produce a well-informed report and recommendations,” an update read.
The committee is also seeking input on how the construction of a monument can be realised to honour, conserve and preserve Witbooi’s legacy.
The committee is accompanied by officials from the National Museum of Namibia and the National Heritage Council of Namibia.
