As the nation mourns, pensioners worry
Geingob's pension hike wish in limbo
A pensioner worries that Geingob's wish to nearly double the pension grant will not be honoured.
A pensioner from Omuthiya has questioned whether late president Hage Geingob's wish to increase the monthly pension grant will be honoured following his passing.
The pensioner was referring to Geingob's New Year’s message, during which he stated that he hoped the monthly old-age grant would be raised from N$1 400 to N$3 000 before the end of his term.
Originally expected to conclude on 21 March 2025, his term has been cut short due to his death this month.
Over the weekend, during the public screening of Geingob’s memorial service at Omuthiya at the information ministry's office, Leah Kashuku, a pensioner, expressed her concerns regarding this issue.
Commending Geingob as a leader who cared deeply for the nation, particularly the elderly, Kashuku wondered whether President Nangolo Mbumba, Geingob's successor, would uphold the promise made by Geingob.
“I was shocked to learn about the passing of the president. He did a lot for us as the elderly. He loved us,” Kashuku said.
“My question now is will we still see an increase in the pension grant as he promised us this year? That was great news because that money helps us a lot.”
