Government has established eight fish farms and aquaculture centres nationwide, deputy fisheries minister Sylvia Makgone said recently.

"Freshwater aquaculture is a government-driven sector and provides catfish and tilapia mostly for food security at the household level in rural areas," said Makgone.

According to Makgone, the centres were established at the Hardap Dam, Leonardville in Omaheke, Fonteintjie in //Karas, Onavivi in the Omusati Region, Ongwediva in Oshana, Mpumgu in Kavango West, Kamutjonga in Kavango East and in the Zambezi Region.

"The deputy minister said government officials regularly conduct inspections and assessments of the production and distribution of young fish, disease control and quality assurance. They also conduct research in support of local fish farm businesses from these centres and take samples for water quality.

"These services are currently offered free of charge because they are intended to promote aquaculture in the country," she said, adding that the ministry already supports 190 small fish farm businesses in this way.
