South gets more rain, cold on its way
Gobabis residents have expressed gratitude for good rainfall in the town and surrounding areas, with the town's dam levels currently at only 3.2%.
Between 34 mm and 38 mm were recorded yesterday morning in the town, and 50 mm on the Kranz plot, located four kilometres outside the town.
On the Voortrekker farm, 12 km east of Gobabis, 55 mm were recorded, and on the Verneukpan farm, north-east of the town, 50 mm. North-west of the town, 22 mm was measured on the Harrem farm and 18 mm on Franshoek. In the vicinity of Witvlei, 32 mm was recorded, and on the Schonfeldt farm near Drimiopsis, 22 mm of rainfall was recorded.
According to the latest NamWater dam bulletin, Gobabis' dam levels are alarmingly low, with the Daan Viljoen Dam at 5.4% capacity, Tilda Viljoen and the Otjivero Main Dam at 4.5% capacity and the Otjivero Silt Dam at 1.3% capacity.
Due to low dam levels, the Gobabis municipality will need to tighten taps for residents, with water rationing to be implemented from next Monday until dam levels rise. Rationing will take place daily between 21:00 and 04:00.
Reports of rain
In Stampriet, 16 mm fell at the Roots farm project.
In Keetmanshoop, up to 55 mm of rain accompanied by hail fell Tuesday afternoon within an hour and 22 mm was measured at the Ditsem farm. The Naute Dam received inflow and is now at 40% capacity after being at 39.3% last week. Rain was also reported in Bethanie in the south-west.
All southern dams, except the Neckartal Dam, saw their levels rise in recent days.
After receiving an inflow of 1.675 million cubic metres of water on Monday, the Hardap Dam's level only increased from 11.7% to 12.2%. The Oanob Dam near Rehoboth also received inflow, which increased the dam's level from 42.3% to 44.3%.
Following rain in the central region, the Von Bach Dam's level increased from 11.1% to 11.3% and the Omataka Dam from 0.4% to 0.6%. The Swakoppoort Dam is 38.6% full, compared to last week's level of 38.2%.

The Okavango River at Rundu has recorded an increase in water level from 5.37 m to 5.45 m over the past few days. The water level of the Zambezi River at Katima Mulilo is at a record low of 1.28 m, while the Kunene River at Ruacana is flowing at 578.1 cubic metres per second. The water levels of the Lower Orange River at Blouputs measured 0.56 m yesterday morning, while the river at Sendelingsdrift stood at 0.4 m. The Namibia Meteorological Service has warned of cold conditions expected from Sunday in the south.
