Namibia intensifies climate change fight
The environment ministry has, throughout the last six months, updated, aligned and developed several key national documents to boost the country’s efforts to counter climate change and mobilise the necessary funding to do so.
The ministry, with the support of GIZ and the European Union through the Climate Change and Inclusive Use of Natural Resources project, hosted a validation workshop on the aligned and updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
Namibia submitted a revised NDC in July 2021, prior to the Conference of the Parties (COP) 26 in Glasgow.
However, this updating exercise was constrained by the lack of resources and time, resulting in shortcomings that are now addressed in the updated version for submission at COP27 – the NDC implementation strategy and action plan (NDCISAP).
The plan will be used as a main coordination tool for the NDCs as well as a resource mobilisation mechanism to attract funding.
Cornerstones
The workshop also validated the updated Green Climate Fund (GCF) country strategy.
According to the ministry, the country programmes are the cornerstone of each country’s pipeline development with the fund.
"It forms the basis for prioritising the development of funding proposals and programmes submitted by accredited entities on behalf of countries for funding."
Environmental commissioner Timoteus Mufeti said Namibia is now at a stage where it is embarking on the next five years of the implementation of the NDC plan.
"During the last five years, we have identified a number of issues; we have identified new priorities, and that has allowed us to relook at our plan and come up with updated and revised NDC goals."
Duty-bound
He said the ministry is also taking the NDC partnership that has been created over the past few years very seriously.
Mufeti underlined that climate change is happening and continues to pose a challenge to sustainable development plans.
"It is therefore our duty to come up with innovative ways to adapt and to take measures to promote mitigation to the impact of climate change."
