Addressing environmental management, legal rights
The Swakopmund Museum hosted a public talk, jointly organised by the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) and Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN), on Tuesday.
The event focused on the Environmental Management Act, addressing pressing environmental issues and legal frameworks aimed at safeguarding Namibia's natural resources.
OCN presented an overview of current environmental challenges, emphasising the severe impacts of overfishing and the drastic alterations to the Benguela system due to strong climatic changes. It highlighted the detrimental effects of diamond mining and pollution, urging immediate action to mitigate these threats to marine ecosystems.
Co-founder Naude Dreyer further highlighted the importance of public consultation with communities. “As a community, we need access to information in able to make informed decisions regarding our surroundings and ecosystems."
LAC practitioner Riwayn Doeseb pointed to the importance of the public consultations before any operation is rolled out.
