Nored threatened by power cuts
NEWS IN SHORT
NamPower CEO Simson Haulofu says the utility is not intentionally targeting local authorities and settlements ahead of planned power cuts.
Haulofu said NamPower is merely seeking to recover what is owed to it by Regional Electricity Distributors (REDs), local authorities and other customers.
The move will potentially see the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) cut electricity supply to Zambezi, Kunene, Kavango East, Kavango West, Omusati, Oshana and Ohangwena regions.
"Nored is the first RED that is being cut; we have never had a RED that is being cut; we have never had a RED in serious debt like what we are seeing with Nored," Haulofu said of the unprecedented move.
Nored said it is engaged in discussions with NamPower to avert a possible power cut.
NamPower is owed approximately N$1.5 billion by its defaulting customers.
