Unam achieves 13th place in Times Higher Education rankings
The University of Namibia (Unam) has made big strides in the latest Times Higher Education 2024 rankings, ascending three spots from 16th to 13th place among 150 Sub-Saharan African universities.
The evaluation considered and allocated ranking scores to themes such as resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership, Africa impact and number of students.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Unam’s pursuit of academic excellence and positions it as one of the top institutions in the region, the university said in a statement.
The higher learning institution said this year's three-point rise in the rankings reflects its ongoing commitment to enhancing its academic standards, research capabilities and community engagement.
"We are incredibly proud of this achievement," said Unam vice-chancellor Professor Kenneth Matengu.
"It is not only a win for our university, but also a reflection of the dedication of our staff, students and all our stakeholders. This ranking is a testament to our collective efforts to position Unam as a leading hub for knowledge creation and meaningful change."

Unam is the only Namibian university to be featured in the rankings and said this achievement further cements its role as a key player in the region’s higher education sector.
According to the university, its rise in the rankings reflects a growing influence and commitment to shaping the future of higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Over the past few years, the university has focused on strategic initiatives to improve academic performance, foster international collaborations and support innovative research that addresses both regional and global challenges.
The Times Higher Education rankings have been a respected benchmark in global academia for over 50 years, with data drawn from over 7 000 institutions across 171 countries.
