The Okongo constituency office on Monday donated stationery worth N$6 000 to Okongo Project School and Olukeno Primary School in the Ohangwena Region.

The schools are home to a combined 500 learners.

Okongo constituency councillor Efraim Shipindo said this is part of their ‘Assist a Child in School’ project, which started in 2020 with the aim of empowering underprivileged school-going children.

“This is our brainchild to help learners stay in school. We started this to solely meet government halfway as some of the school budgets are unable to cater to their needs. This is my own project to help the parents as they sometimes struggle to provide stationery for their children,” he added.

Established recently, the Okongo Project School houses 200 learners and offers education from pre-primary to grade seven. Olukeno Primary School boasts 300 learners.

"The mission is to ensure that knowledge is accessible to all. Education is the key to reducing poverty levels within our communities. We need to empower the young people as they are the future of this country," Shipindo said, adding that learners who come from impoverished backgrounds are often left behind and not included in what he said late president Hage Geingob stressed inclusivity on: The Namibian House.
