Walvis Bay gets ready to celebrate rich heritage of San
Walvis Bay is set to host the first-ever Erongo Region San Cultural Festival from 31 July to 4 August in Walvis Bay at the Jan Wilken Rugby Stadium.
The festival aims to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the San people.
The festival will showcase a variety of handmade artworks, intricate craftsmanship and captivating cultural performances.
Visitors can look forward to different competitions and numerous engaging activities that showcase the culture and history of the San in Namibia.
Rebuild a community
Carla Katiti, chairperson of the organising committee for the festival, expressed her concerns about the erosion of traditional practices and the decline of San culture.
“We are labelled as a marginalised group in Namibia, and we want to migrate from that. We want to rebuild our culture because our kids are growing up with no cultural identity.”
She also emphasised the importance of bringing the San community together in Walvis Bay, noting that many members of the community are out of touch with their history.
“It is up to us to be recognised in this country. That is why I took this initiative to come up with the festival and take our people to the sea,” she added, noting that many have not yet visited Namibia's coast.
All invited to participate
All San exhibitors wanting to exhibit at the exhibition can take part for free, Katiti said.
She said this strategy is aimed at encouraging a robust and authentic representation of their culture. She also called on interested exhibitors to book their stalls now to secure their spots.
For others wishing to set up stalls, there are various pricing options: stalls for medicine, herbs and traditional clothing are N$350, food stalls are N$500, and stalls selling both food and alcohol are N$1 500.
