Weekend robberies claim over N$1.2m

Mariud Ngula
Thieves made off with goods and valuables to the tune of N$1.26 million over the weekend.

According to Namibian Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, a Gobabis resident was scammed out of N$975 900 on Friday after he allegedly gave his online banking details to a stranger.

The suspect reportedly claimed to be an official from the ‘fraud department’ of a local bank, who was reportedly following up on a text message the victim received, which claimed he had purchased bitcoin.

The victim received calls, supposedly from a bank official, who said his account was ‘under suspicion’ and that he must provide his online banking login details, which he did. Multiple transfers were then made from his account. No one has yet been arrested.

Meanwhile, in Swakopmund, a pensioner was defrauded of N$225 800 on the same day. The suspect, posing as a bank official, contacted the victim under the pretence of stopping a suspicious transaction. The suspect sent a fake bank notification and requested the pensioner's username, which allowed access to the account, leading to the transfer of funds to four accounts. No recovery or arrests have been made.

Man stabbed, robbed

In another incident on Friday, a victim was robbed of valuable items amounting to N$46 800 in Windhoek’s Katutura. Police said the items included a cellphone, Apple watch, sunglasses, cash and Apple AirPods. The items have not yet been recovered.

On the same day, a suspect took off with three goats valued at N$4 800. The incident took place in the Ohangwena Region’s Okelemba village. No recovery or arrests have been made.

In Katima Mulilo on Friday, a 28-year-old man was arrested for stealing a television worth N$4 000. The suspect allegedly broke a padlock at Choto compound and took off with the TV, which was later recovered.

A 20-year-old man was attacked and stabbed in the chest by a suspect who then robbed him of his belongings, valued at N$1 100, at a local shebeen in Kavango West’s Nkurenkuru on Saturday. According to the police, the items included cash, a pair of pants, a belt and a set of keys. No recoveries or arrests have been made.
