Trigger-happy ex-Swapo councillor's pending attempted murder case
Part of the reason why the State objected to the granting of bail to former Swapo Party Nkurenkuru constituency councillor Damian Nakambare is that he has two pending cases – one of attempted murder and another of theft.
He now stands accused of attempted murder after he shot a man last Sunday.
Nakambare yesterday appeared before Magistrate Barry Mufana in the Kahenge Periodic Court where he was denied bail and the matter was postponed to 8 November for further police investigations.
He remains in police custody.
State prosecutor Godfry Shivolo told the court that Nakambare is not a good candidate for bail as the counts he faces are of a serious nature, and informed the court about the suspect’s pending cases – an attempted murder case at Ncaute and a theft case in Rundu.
Magistrate Mufana remarked that it appears that Nakambare enjoys committing similar crimes while he is out on bail, hence the decision to oppose bail.
Nakambare informed the court that he will use the services of a private lawyer.
Shooting
Nakambare was arrested on Sunday for shooting a man in the abdomen during an argument.
He shot the victim, who was allegedly employed by him, in the presence of four police officers, eyewitnesses claimed.
Kavango West police crime investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Abner Agas, confirmed the incident, adding that Nakambare used a 9mm pistol.
The victim, whose name has not yet been made public, is currently admitted at the Rundu State Hospital.
The former constituency councillor has been charged with attempted murder, contravening Section 38 of the Arms and Ammunition Act, negligent handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place.
“I can confirm that it happened in the presence of police officers. I understand that the police were going to resolve the issue,” Agas said. He added that the police officers did not know that the former councillor was armed.
