SHORTS: Soldier denied bail for brutal murder of niece

Nikanor Nangolo
Soldier Nicolaus Kakuru Kamati (25), accused of the brutal murder of his 22-year-old niece Mayira Kapango, was denied bail during his initial appearance in the Rundu Magistrate's Court last Friday. Kamati appeared before Magistrate Selma Shiiga, who postponed the case to 3 April. Public prosecutor Michael Munika strongly opposed bail, citing the gravity of the offence. According to a police report, the incident occurred on 8 January at approximately 20:00 in Mbambi village, Kavango East region. Kapango was in her room listening to music with a headset when Kamati allegedly entered and struck her on the forehead with a metal iron, leaving her with a severe open wound. “Kapango was overheard by other housemates when she screamed once. They rushed to check on her and found her lying in a pool of blood,” Kanyetu said. Kamati reportedly fled the scene immediately after the attack.
