Police warn against smuggling contraband into jail

The Oshikoto police have issued a stern warning that they will have no mercy for those who sneak illegal goods into police holding cells.

This comes after a 32-year-old man was arrested last week after he tried to sneak illicit goods into the Tsumeb police holding cells.

A case of dealing in dependence-producing substances has been opened against the man.

The suspect, who was due to appear in the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court on Friday, was found in possession of mandrax and cannabis.

Caught in the act

Police regional commander, commissioner Teopoline Kalompo-Nashikaku, said the suspect approached police officers and said he was looking for work as a cleaner.

Kalompo-Nashikaku said when the officers became suspicious about his request, they searched his bag and discovered the drugs.

"Upon further enquiry, it was discovered that they were destined for the holding cells," she said.

She said the police recovered bags of skunk weighing 5 grams worth N$250, four bags of pure cannabis weighing 5 grams worth N$50, two halves of Mandrax tablets, and one quarter of Mandrax worth N$150.

The police also found three Best Whiskey packs consisting of 60 sachets valued at N$300.

The police investigation into the matter continues.
