Crime in the capital is reaching new heights.

This according to the City Police, who this week released a list of 50 danger zones in Windhoek.

The list indicates where, when and for which crimes the capital's streets need to be policed.

In the vicinity of the Wanaheda police station, police urged residents to be vigilant at shebeens along Monte Christo Road and behind A Shipena Secondary School.

Another danger zone is near Hage Geingob High School and at the intersection of Abraham Mashego and Monte Christo roads.

Residents should be aware that the grabbing of cellphones is rife here, police said.

Havana, Goreangab

Havana has been flagged as a hotspot for robberies, burglaries, assaults, rape and murder.

On Monte Christo road, crime hotspots are at three- and four-way intersections, namely at USave, the Havana landfill and at Walvis Bay, Zambia and Outapi streets.

In Goreangab, Matsitsi Street's intersection with Green Mountain Dam Road is a danger zone where robberies, rape, assault and housebreaking occur.

In Eveline Street in Greenwell Matongo, illegal alcohol sales lead to assaults, robberies and vehicle break-ins, police said.

Wanaheda, Ombili

In Wanaheda, house burglaries, vehicle break-ins and robberies occur. Marsey Street near Xwama, Zambezi Street, the riverbed behind Woermann Brock and the Wanaheda bus stop can be dangerous.

Residents of Barug, Antioches and Arimathea streets and near the riverbed along Pomonzi in Katutura’s Luxury Hill should also be on their guard. Prostitution also occurs here, according to the police.

Ombili residents should be cautious around Ongava, Etetewe and Omuryambabi streets as well as at the Etetewe-Omuvapu four-way. House break-ins, assaults, theft and robberies also occur here.

Okahandja Park's open market and Rev Paulus Gowaseb Street are targeted by criminals, while the Hakahana clinic, Omulunga Street and the area near Moses Garoeb Primary School are unsafe.

In Grysblok, the four-way intersection and areas near any riverbed are considered hotspots.

In Herero Location, crime is rife especially at Parliament Bar, BSK Bar and Herero Mall.

Otjomuise, Khomasdal

Meanwhile, numerous bank attacks, taxi hijackings, assaults, drug sales and vehicle thefts have occurred in Otjomuise's part of Matsitsi Street.

The area’s Tokyo, Vienna, Beijing and Kitchen streets have been flagged as dangerous, and crime is rife at the shopping centre in Cassamba Street.

In Rocky Crest, the dirt road is dangerous, along with Black Rock Island and Inchaboe streets as well as Sam Nujoma Drive.

Residents of Gladiola, Moses Garoeb and Kornalyn streets in Khomasdal should be wary of house break-ins and theft at knife-point.

Other areas

In the central business district, police have urged residents to be cautious around Wernhil, Maerua Mall and Auspannplatz, while Tauben Glen, Woermann Brock in Hochland Park and Westlane shopping centre in Pionierspark can be dangerous as well.

Baines, Grove Mall, Auas Valley, the entire Dorado Valley and the area surrounding the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) have also been flagged.

Windhoek North, Academia, Cimbebasia, Auasblick, Suiderhof and Olympia’s Lolo Park are hotspots for house break-ins and robberies.

Areas in Eros and Ludwigsdorf have been flagged as well.
