The community of Okatope village is still reeling in shock after a 65-year-old pensioner allegedly murdered his brother in cold blood on Sunday evening.

The incident reportedly took place at around 18:40 at the suspect’s house in the Ohangwena Region’s Okatope village, situated in the Ohangwena constituency.

Regional police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Zacharias Amakali, said the suspect allegedly shot the victim - Johannes Hanghome (51) - with a firearm, and bullets struck him in his chest and right leg. He died on the spot.

Amakali said it is alleged that Hanghome went to the suspect's house and started an argument with him.

“The argument escalated into a physical fight. The suspect went inside the house, came back out again and shot the victim,” he said.

The suspect has been arrested and the next of kin have been informed. He is expected to appear in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court this week.

Amakali said the deceased was allegedly known to be a problematic person towards his relatives. Pending an autopsy, his body is being kept at the Engela District Hospital.

Girl raped

Meanwhile in Omusati, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men at Onandjila village in the Okahao constituency.

Omusati regional crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho, said the incident happened on Saturday at around 23:00.

It is alleged that the suspects – aged 25 and 38 – had sexual intercourse with the minor. Both have been arrested and are due to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court this week.

Suicide

Also on Saturday, two people died by suicide – one at around 05:00 at the Ouhwaala village in the Anamulenge constituency and the other at around 08:00 at the Uukuvu village in the Okahao constituency.

Simaho said it is alleged that the first deceased hanged himself with a rope in a thatched room in his house.

Aliosius Rudolf Shikalepo (54) died on the spot. His body has been transported to the Outapi hospital mortuary before being taken to Okahao for the post-mortem.

In the second incident, Shiimi Tolata (64) allegedly hanged himself with a rope from the roof of his room.
