Surging crime requires urgent intervention
PDM's Hidipo Hamata said it is imperative that comprehensive background checks, mandatory waiting periods and a need-based approach be introduced for firearm ownership.
Popular Democratic Movement member of parliament Hidipo Hamata has called for urgent action to combat the deep-rooted issues contributing to high crime rates in the country.
He was contributing to a debate in parliament on rising crime in Namibia.
Hamata emphasised that it is critical to consider the underlying factors contributing to surging crime rates and the immediate measures needed to address the issue.
“Namibia is facing an alarming rise in criminal activities, posing a severe threat to the safety and well-being of our citizens.
"The escalating crime rates are undermining the social fabric of our communities and instilling fear in the hearts of Namibians.”
Hamata said one of the significant contributors to the high crime rate in Namibia is the leniency of existing laws and regulations.
Public safety
In particular, that the accessibility of firearms has played a critical role in exacerbating the problem.
“Our current firearm regulations, in some cases, allow these weapons to fall into the wrong hands, leading to tragic consequences.”
According to him, to effectively combat crime, a holistic approach that includes revisiting and strengthening firearm regulations must be considered.
He said this could help address some of the significant root causes of crime.
“It is imperative that we implement comprehensive background checks, establish mandatory waiting periods and introduce a need-based approach for firearm ownership.”
