Operation Basadi a success
Focus on violence against women and children
A total of 165 arrests were made in the latest police campaign against gender violence.
The regional law enforcement operation codenamed Basadi, which started nine years ago, has been a success, the police said at a media briefing last week.
The operation was conducted simultaneously by SADC member states to apprehend fugitive suspects wanted for violence against women and children.
This year’s operation ran between 18 and 20 May.
"The crimes of focus for this operation were rape, murder, kidnapping and assault," said Major-General Anna-Marie Nainda during the briefing.
They also carried out smaller operations such as school visits, stop-and-searches, roadblocks and visits to bars.
Successes
During the operation, a total of 165 arrests were made, including 119 Namibians.
"In total, 153 awareness campaigns were conducted throughout the country around various matters such as baby dumping and violence.
“Several radio and television interviews were held to spread the word," Nainda said.
The police also carried out 12 social responsibility activities including donations of food and baby necessities.
A large number of contraband items such as knives, counterfeit cosmetic products and TV sets were confiscated.
"The Namibian Police Force would like to thank all the stakeholders, especially women in uniform who displayed enthusiasm in Operation Basadi, which is geared primarily at tackling crimes that affect women and children.
“We look forward to the next Basadi Operation," Nainda concluded.
